The various Cyprichromis species have a wider variety of postures and moves to this end, than any other cichlid. This could be caused by their habit of gathering in mixed schools, with several closely related species present. The vast array of complex maneuvers may secure, that only "compatible" females react to the signals from the males? |
9/1 2006.![]() One of the more special postures; The male uses, other than fins and general body movements, also his mouth for signalling. The best description of this particular signal is actually "kissing movements" ![]() The efforts of the male is rewarded, as the female releases an egg... ![]() ...which she immediately picks up in her mouth. The Cyprichromis species are incomparable swimmers, and the female is actually able to move backwards fast enough to do this without having to turn ![]() The male positions himself, so that his yolk can be swallowed by the female, thus fertilizing the egg |
