Protein skimmer. The skimmer is an ATB 2`nd edition Cone skimmer. The Cone shape is stated to be the most efficient shape made so far. I am unable to say if that is true, but the skimmer works very well, and is on top of that, also extremely low on noise, which is otherwise often a problem with skimmers.
Mechanical filter. This is just two Nylon stockings, mounted on each drain to the Sump (look HERE). They are cleaned once a week, to avoid clogging and undesired biological activity.
38 kgs. Live rocks/sand. The rocks contain large amounts of beneficial bacteria, and the diverse structure assures both aerobic and anaerobic areas, Which enables a balance that results in a complete decomposition of waste products. The sand, which is Fiji Pink, distributed in a layer of app. 3 inches in thickness, acts the same way, and in addition releases various trace elements to the water.
A Deep Sand bed filter in the sump has been added 18 months after start, to reinforce the anaerobic processes, thereby reducing nitrate levels further. The filter has a footprint of 38x25 cm. and a depth of 10 cm.
